My wood strip surfski has been brewing for a very long time. It started with the Sea Racer. As the name implies, it was designed as a very fast sea racer with long distance touring capacity. I found the inspiration in Alaska and the plans were finalized during spring 2006.

I started building the prototype during the summer and had the hull and deck done when my calendar started to overflow with jobs and assignments and at the same time, requests for classes and talks (the Sea Racer parts was used for strip building demonstrations).

Other builders were more ambitious and Sea Racers got launched – almost 50 til now – and they seemed to deliver: tippy, super fast and quite able i rough seas – sometimes in unexpected contexts. Some examples: here, here, here and here.

I got requests for commercial designs, while the Sea Racer prototype collected dust in the workshop. First was Nordic kayaks. After a couple of successful multisport kayaks (Rocket and Rocket plus), they suggested a surfski for nordic waters. The Sea Racer prototype parts were redefined as test devices for surfski ideas. After some going back and forth between the drawing table and a newly built surfski prototype, the Fusion went into production.

Now requests for a strip started coming in via mail and over the phone, and I confidently answered "Yes, working on it...". Which was true – a rough sketch was recently saved in the "bright ideas" folder in the computer.

Seabird Designs requested a line of surfskis, and the Wave line found its way to the kayaks stores.

Three new surfskis for Nordic Kayaks was next in turn, but by this time Fredrik Lindström were doing most of the actual design work. I helped in refining the software output into working drawings and worked on the visual design and decorating scheme.

...more and more questions about the coming strip surfski ;-)

Roar Berge got tired of waiting and built a surfski version of the Sea Racer.

Jan-Olof Karlsson offered to build a prototype of the surfski, from the not quite finished plans. So I adjusted the dimensions for Jan-Olof and he cleared the workshop and got started.

A new company contacted me with an idea that had been in my mind for a while: a shorter, less specialized surfski for "common" usage as a touring craft – with the best qualities from both sea kayaks and surfskis.

Then a week ago Alexandra Marcotte in Kanada (he built a Black Pearl a couple of years ago) took the bold step of actually ordering and paying in advance for the surfski plans – and that, of course was the final kick. I had to clear the workspace from all urgent assignments and deadlines swishing by, and get those plans done!

So here it is, finally after six years, a strip surfski! It is of course a much much better surfski than the one I started drawing back then – I have learned a lot in those years, the surfski concept has evolved and the market has grown. It is designed as an intermediate ski – not an elite ski nor a beginner skis (even if it will be well within reach of the ambitious beginner as well). It can be built with an under-hull rudder for racing/excercise or an aft mounted rudder and hatches for touring. The dimensions are 608x48 cm and the length can be adjusted as usual during setup, with advice on the plans for hulls between 576 and 640 cm. The cockpit structure may seem complicated to build, but three suggested methods are indicated on the plans: strip, foam or carbon/fiberglass.

A shorter and wider version will be available later – in about six years... (just joking ;-)

I do not plan to include a top level elite ski. Very few amateur builders would be able to match a professionally built elite ski tipping the scale at approx 10-11 kg – and those who would, won't need my plans anyway. If you want to compete in the surfski top worldwide circus, I suggest you buy a Nordic Kayaks Nitro, or one of the other top skis.

Sea racer or surfski?

What is the real difference between the Sea Racer and the Spindrift? Or in general – what separates surfskis from sea kayaks or multisport kayaks?

Well, it turns out the only sure sign is the cockpit configuration. In everything else there are lots of crossover crafts floating around, defying categorization: sea kayaks with surfski maneuverability and surfski with the calm movements of sea kayaks and all kinds of hull configurations.

Surfskis were from the start developed to run off the wind on large swell reaching extreme speeds, and to surf the wave fronts in control. To keep the position and direction on those waves, extreme maneuverability was needed. To control the craft, precise steering and a large rudder was necessary. The stem was high to avoid diving in the gigantic waves of the native waters in Hawaii, South Africa, California, Australia – while the stern often became little more than a long tail with a rudder. The fore part was deep and narrow moving the lateral center forward to balance the large rudder, while the aft part was wide and shallow to prevent the stern from submerging in speeds close to or above hull speed. Surfskis became elite tools for tough oceans races. But eventually the market evolved to include also crafts more suited to "normal" paddlers with touring ambitions.

Sea kayaks on the other hand evolved towards strong tracking, rather than maneuverability. The designer sacrificed some maneuverablity for comfort on long passages – in automotive terms they have the soft somewhat imprecise steering with a healthy margin for errors of a family car, rather than the precise and attention-demanding direct steering of a race car. Of course some of the control is lost in the process. Have you tried to surf a steep wave diagonally in a sea kayak, you will know what I am talking about. But lately we have seen a lot of sea kayaks with almost surfski-like maneuverability and control.

A look at the lines of the Sea Racer and Spindrift reveals these differences. The Sea Racer hull is more symmetric, with LCB, LCF and CLA quite close to the center, indicating a hull that moves smoothly and predicably in the water (LCB = Longitudinal Center of Boyancy = the centroid of the underwater volume of the boat expressed as a longitudinal location. LCF = Longitudinal Center of Flotation = center of the waterplane. CLA = the geometric center of the lateral plane). The seat is located slightly aft of the center, providing controllability without being overly dependant on the rudder (mildly understeering in automotive terms). The rocker is not very accentuated, which improves tracking. The kayak deck with cockpit rim/spraydeck keeps water out, allowing for a lower and less wind sensitive profile. For the same reason the freeboard midships can be lower, to allow a lower and less tiring paddle stroke on touring.

In the surfski the CLA is moved forward to balance the large rudder. The seat position slightly forward of the LCB is the key to the efficient and precise steering on wave fronts – in automotive terms the ski is slightly oversteered in low speeds, but becomes neutral in higher speeds since the longitudinal position of the hulls center of turning is related to speed.

The stations drawings show that the surfski is wider and higher than the Sea Racer. But the difference in volume and load capacity is not as large as it might seem – the higher Cp of the Sea Racer means that the volume is more evenly distributed along the hull, while the surfski has more volume concentrated midships. This suggests that the Sea Racer should be slightly faster on flat water, but the surfski should win in waves.

The shape of the sections look quite different. In the Sea Racer I wanted to optimize the intitial stability in what is a very narrow craft (43 cm), with the chines also enhancing steering control when the hull is leaned (a way to keep rudder turbulence to a minimum). For the wider surfski I chosed to minimize friction with elliptical sections below the waterline.

Software and the design process

The sectional shape is also to a degree influenced by different calculation algorithms. The Sea Racer was developed using Bearboat by Robert Livingstone for the hydrodynamic calculations. The main advantage of this is that the underbody defining vectors hang from the waterline and the keel, which makes it possible for the software to minimize the wetted surface for every set of design parameters chosen. It saves a lot of time finetuning the hull to low friction, but also means that the bottom and freeboard are two independent sets of curves, meeting at the waterline.

For the surfski I used Ross Leidy's KayakFoundry, forked from Bearboat, but with one important difference: the vectors hangs from the sheer and the keel. That means better overall control of the lines (including deck shape and stem and stern) compared to Bearboat, but the disadvantage that you have to work the wetted surface manually based on experience and through repeated iterations followed by checking the calculations. One further disadvantage is that KayakFoundry is just for Windows. I have to run it virtualized in Parallels on my iMac – it works, but a bit slower than real Mac applications.

Those softwares are easy to use and do an excellent job at their level, but the downside of the simplicity is the many limitations in what can be achieved (not a problem for the amateur builder, who would solve those issues in the construction phase rather than on the computer anyway). Therefore I use them for a quick zooming in on the hull shape I want, along with all the hydrodynamical data I need – getting within 95% of the final design in surpricingly short time and with adequate accuracy. From there I transfer the lines to Illustrator for the final manual finetuning, including both functional tweaking and the visual layout of lines and surfaces – which normally takes more time than the first 95% in the design software!

That may seem a tedious way to design a kayak, but the alternative – professional ship CAD design systems are very expensive and bloated with features of which I would use a small percentage (I do not need to know what happens to the ships stability when 600 tons of crude oil sloshes around in an half empty tank, nor at which parameters the risk of propeller cavitation becomes an issue ;-) and would take hundreds of hours training for me to master.

Spindrift

The surfski is named Spindrift – an apt name for a craft with an appetite for wind and waves.

"Hej,

This time the designs are for a new player on the market – Axis kayaks. The basic order was for a line of short and easily handled kayaks and surfskis, for beginners to feel confident in and for experienced paddlers playing and surfing in waves. The method to achieve this is to combine the best qualities from sea kayaks and surfskis.

Very simplified, sea kayaks are developed for comfortable touring with camping gear and to handle waves smoothly and undramatically. They have generally large volume and load capacity, and the hulls are configured towards trackability to make long passages effortless and to be maneuverable without rudder/skeg. For safety they are more or less easy to roll and re-entry from the water, or rely on additional safety gadgets.

Similarly simplified, surfskis are developed for speed and control in demanding conditions, with less stability, very little directional stability, and limited load capacity. The lack of trackability means a lively but difficult-to-handle hull, but with a large rudder with direct and precise response it offers superb maneuvering and total control in waves. Safety is based on the open cockpit, making it easy to re-enter from the water – no water to pump out and no spraydeck to reattach.

A successful mix is of course not altogether straightforward. There are some opposing properties that cannot be handled without compromises. But we wanted the general comfort, load capacity and smooth movements from sea kayaks combined with the control in waves and exciting speed performance from surfskis. Which of course is nothing new, but we felt there were more to this combination than had been previously achieved.

Much care has gone into the construction, rethinking a lot of small details normally taken for granted. New integrated hatches with clever locking knobs are elegant, unobtrusive and light. A new seat-bulkhead assembly is light, comfortable and safe. We use epoxy instead of the cheaper polyester and vinylester – partly because epoxy is stronger, lasts longer and is more durable than the alternatives, and partly because the curing time is long enough to allow for vacuum infusion, resulting in a higher fiber-epoxy ratio – and thus an even lighter, stronger and more durable laminate.

Comfort and safety are perhaps the most important qualities in a kayak. You may accept and get used to some peculiarities in a kayak, but if you are not comfortable and feel safe, paddling will never be more than a short and not very exciting pastime. The same bucket seat is used in both the kayaks and the surfskis – a comfortable seat carefully designed to provide support where needed, but also to allow working the knees racing style – and at the same time to connect the paddler to the hull without feeling cramped, and minimize the volume of the cockpit – which is an important safety measure, should the cockpit for any reason become water-filled. The stability curve is balanced to provide a reasonable (but not too much) initial stability, and very good secondary stiffness. This means that the kayak will be more cooperative in rough seas, calmer and drier in challenging circumstances.

The new crafts will be avaliable with kayak deck or open surfski cockpit – maybe introducing convinced sea kayak paddlers to the exciting world of surfskis, and vice versa.

Along with the development of the hulls and seating configuration, a lot of thought and time have gone into the decoration scheme. Looking at the kayak market it may seems that almost conceivable scheme have been done somewhere or sometimes. It is not easy to come up with a layout that feels fresh and new, not just now but also in a few years, which stands out without being busy, which at the same time is thrilling and subtle and that is viewed as exciting but not ostentatious. This is what we finally decided upon: a few colors, simple uncomplicated color fields, graphically distinct combinations (so simple that they can be implemented in the gelcoat layer and thus protected from wear).

Starting with three basic models, between 450 and 500 cm in length - short enough for surf and play in rough water or whitewater, but long enough to keep up with longer kayaks at cruising speed, the first kayaks and skis will be shown at outdoor trade shows and fairs in the fall, and begin shipping during late fall. They will hit the stores during spring 2014 (apart from Kajakk & Fritid in Drammen, Norway, who have been involved from the start, we do not have a dealer list ready yet).

Axis Kayaks new website went live a couple of days ago, with a short presentation of the project. More info later...

Men gör ingen wet-exit i första taget.

I launched my Njord "Otāne" on the 6th April with a small flotilla of friends & a barbeque party afterwards. Otāne is the Māori (indigenous New Zealand people) name for the 26th night after the new moon. Otāne is generally a good day which proved true for the launch day last Saturday - calm & sunny.

I have adulterated the design a little; adding a rudder, a high deck & a large cockpit. I hope you will excuse this, rudders are a cultural imperitive in New Zealand. I will race the kayak & prefer to paddle with my knees up & together.

I've paddled three hours so far & I am pleasantly surprised at the boat's stability & good manners despite being 7cm narrower than my previous sea kayak. At 18kg Otāne accelerates down waves easily. Stability was fine in a confused short chop & the low bow makes a head wind less of a chore. I'm looking forward to my first race later this month, hopefully this boat will improve my times by 5 - 10%.

Many thanks to the kayak building community online, especially Ulf Johansson, Dan Caouette & Tomi Biloglav. I deeply appreciate their generous knowledge sharing & the time they take to document & present their building experience.

Thanks Bjorn for a great kayak.

Cheers

There have been administrative and technical problems the last 24 hours, the worst during the afternoon and evening yesterday (local time). Unfortunately this meant that I couldn´t access the orders that were to be shipped yesterday (all order data are stored on the site back-end and unaccessible at the time for shipping).

A couple of weeks ago I was interviewed by journalist Anna Teresia Berg for a short article (one text and one photo page) about my kayaks: why, how, who etc. At the same time photographer Daniel Nilsson paid a visit and directed a couple of superb photos with kayak building in my basement shop. A pale winter sun through a dusty basement window provided a soft and quite flattering light, which he used cleverly. Nice work!

Why Grenada? Primarily since an opportunity appeared to see the sailing family, that for the last month had been crusing around in the Caribbean. All is well onboard, they are tanned, enthusiastic and in tune with a laidback tropical lifestyle – no longing after a regular Swedish job-and-school existence

After two weeks on Grenada I begin see their point.

Grenada is a small volcanic island (344 square kilometers), the southernmost of the Windward Islands – together with Carriacou, Petit Martinique and a few other small islands an parliamentary democracy – with dense rainforests in the gorges (think Jurassic Park ), narrow winding roads up and down the mountain ridge, rivers, lakes and waterfalls, plantations (bananas, sugar cane, cocoa, nutmeg etc), surrounded by incredible white beaches, shaded by palm trees and an azure blue 25˚C sea. During the dry season (January to May) the weather is comfortably warm, 25-30˚C – the trade winds are cool and dry.

Polish boat in S:t Georges – imagine crossing the Atlantic in this old rusty contraption!

Navigating to a mooring in Prickly Bay on the south coast

Grand Anse Beach just a short walk from the hotel – and a distant shower

A tour of the inland – lush foliage in the gorges

Some facts (a few of them quite surprising) about Grenada:

No malaria or other tropical deceases to worry about – a few cases of dengue fever is reported.

No venomous snakes, spiders, or other dangerous animals – but there is a nasty tree: Manchineel Tree is poisonous – the sap (and even rain dropping from the leaves) can cause burns and eye damage. But those trees are painted red around the stem as a temporary warning and are removed and destroyed in due time.

Almost no criminality and no gangs. For a Swede used to constantly overcrowded prisons, it is a bit surrealistic to learn that Grenadas 250 places rarely are used to more than 40% – but still that is a higher rate convicted (1 ‰ mot 0,6 ‰) than in Sweden. The police are not very visible in the streets – I believe we saw a police car at two occasions at the most. We never experienced any feeling of insecurity or a potentially threatening situation.

No begging in spite of higher unemployment rate than in Sweden. Since the island is sparsely populated, there is cultivable land for most people that thus can be to a degree self-supporting, and since there is no official social security, people help each other. The society is therefore quite homogenous in spite of religious and dem0graphic differences – most of the population is middle class, with small numbers of rich and poor. You will meet more beggars on a short walk though the center of Lund than in two weeks on Grenada – but the fellow on the right begged unashamedly for bananas!

Very few road accidents in spite of, from our point of view, bad roads and lack of structured traffic regulations – maybe due to the roads being so bad that they actually enforce lower speeds, that there were a lot of really efficient speed bumps of a kind that no one with any regard for the car or their spine/head negotiates in more than 5 km/t, and very efficient and elaborate communications with horns and hands, solving potential problems before they evolve into incidents or accidents. But 12 road kills in one year is still twice as many per capita than in Sweden.

Public transportation is quite efficient and easily accessible – but a winter-pale Swede has to endure a quite aggressive marketing from buses and taxis. The buses (mostly Japanese minibuses with 12-15 seats) are privately owned by the chauffeur that is licensed for a certain area and the fare is less than one USD. There are bus stops, but in practice you stop a bus anywhere (or, if the bus is not filled you will be hailed and invited by the conductor before even contemplating a bus ride). To get off you knock on the roof – but for a few cents extra they are happy to deviate from the route and take you just about anywhere. There are a lot of these buses and schedules are unnecessary – you rarely have to wait more than a couple of minutes. I could easily have that system here in Lund ;-)

Health, healthcare and life quality seems fine. Statistically Sweden have a lower rate of most serious deceases, but in suicides and drug or alcohol related deaths Grenada fair much better. Life expectancy is lower than in Sweden (70,3/75,6 year vs 78,7/83,4 in Sweden). Maybe you can detect a slight difference in beauty ideals in the obesity numbers: in Sweden 16,3 % of the men and 15,4 % of the women are fat – on Grenada 13,6 % of the men but 27,1 % of the women are fat ;-)
Sweden occupies an embarrassing fourth place among the countries of the world in Alzheimer frequency whereas Grenada is in place 119. There is a reputable university in S:t George, where many American medical students and professors spend a couple of years of their educations or careers. (Numbers from www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/ and from 2010)

Grenada lies south of the hurricane highway through the Caribbean and has been hit by just three hurricanes in the last 50 years. Hurricanes Janet 1955 and Ivan 2004 were the worst, while Emily 2005 caused some damage on island Carriacou north of Grenada. Other hurricanes have passed north of the Grenadines (as "minor inconveniences"). Grenada is thus considered hurricane safe for visiting boats. There are several “hurricane holes”, deep protected fiords were boats can weather out even quite dramatic conditions.

Steep climbing to the Seven Sisters Falls – it doesn’t look all that tough in the photos, but I can assure it was quite a climb

Really exciting to visit an art exhibition wearing snorkel, mask and fins. (Photo from surrealistisch.blogspot.se – I did not bring my sport camera)

But I had the good fortune of being offered to borrow a Feathercraft Khatsalano(?) and a wing paddle from one of the Swedish boats in Prickly Bay, for a couple of hours round the bays and points (thanks Staffan!)

Morne Rouge Beach a short walk from the hotel – small, nice and somewhat secluded...

After a couple of days I began dreaming of a cottage with a design studio on the hill overlooking the bay, where I could draw up kayak plans and logos, and knock up websites – and perhaps try to introduce a more diversified and evolved kayaking culture. The prices did not seem too formidable and the internet connections were fast and reliable ;-)

Fascinating travel literature to enjoy under the palm trees when the new tan needed a break: Christoffer Hitchens autobiography, cleverly titled Hitch-22.

"Powered by the Fiery Mind, Guided by Imagination", skriver Rikard Fåhraeus om sin skapelse.

Arthur Ransome gjorde för snart 100 år en drastisk jämförelse mellan ett hus och en båt: "Houses, are but badly built boats so firmly aground that you cannot think of moving them. They are definitely inferior things, belonging to the vegetable not the animal world, rooted and stationary, incapable of gay transition. I admit, doubtfully, as exceptions, snail-shells and caravans. The desire to build a house is the tired wish of a man content thenceforward with a single anchorage. The desire to build a boat is the desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting-place." (ur Racundra's First Cruise )

Men skynda!
