Frej no 2 – Klaas van der Pijl

A new Frej from Klaas van der Pijl, this one shorter and built for maneuverability rather than for long-distance touring, as his previous Frej.

"Hi Bjorn,

It has been quite a while since I have purchased your licence to build a second frej. I finished her rather quickly in 3 months time back then, in order to bring it with me to anglesey on a kayaking course. This time the kayak is 520 cm long to make rockhopping a bit easier (as opposed to my previous 570cm one), and build with s-glass which I vacuum laminated. The kayak has become strong enough to withstand close up encounters with rocks, yet also still pretty light weight. Interesting detail for me was that i offset the skeg from the center line, in an attempt to get less sand of our sandy Dutch beaches jamming it. That worked beautifully. The hull was made out of red cedar and the deck out of paulownia. She paddles like a dream. Quite manoeuvrable, very fun to play in, yet with a little bit of skeg she also paddles straight like a beauty. It has been the only kayak I have paddled in the last year and a half, on everything from play sessions to longer crossings to the Dutch wadden islands. I am yet again very happy with my frej!
