Återkallade paddelflottörer i USA

Euro Paddle Pass

EPP

The new competence classing system for Europe have been published in part. It covers six color-graded levels: white, yellow, green, blue, red and black (the first, white, is an optional discovery level, with very little "competence" involved) and will in time cover all paddling disciplines.

Available now are:

  • General Information on the EPP Awards
  • Level 1 and 2 (All disciplines)
  • White Water Kayak (Levels 3-5)
  • Canoe (Levels 3-5)
  • Sea Kayak (Levels 3-5)
  • Nordic Sea Kayak (Levels 3-5) - somewhat curiosly this seems to be about Scandinavian K1-trainer class

Descriptions of the instructor levels are missing - an agreements on this has not been reached yet. Missing are also descriptions of marathon, sprint, multisport etc.

Someone notice a similarity to the BCU system? Not surpricing since the BCU have been an important advisor for this project.

Here is the link to the EPP site. There you will find most about the system, the disciplines and the levels. It is a work-in-progress though. Some parts are missing, a few links does not lead to the expected etc. And the site is a formidable horror from a designers view – not many of the outdated obsolete practices from the early primitive web pages are missing - not one of this centurys advances have been employed. I am in shock!

Nevertheless it will be interesting to see what impact this will have and how it will be used.

Summer again…

The car a few meters from the launching

27 deg C, blazing sun, no wind and 18 deg in the shallow waters of Salviken – it doesn´t get much more summer at our latitude. I took a brake in the writing job (an article on kayak building for a swedish magazine) and a trip to the waterfront. A short workout and some rolling, as usual - in Njord for a change. I felt Njord needed some warming up before the longer tours of the coming months.

John´s White Pearl?

John´s White Pearl

A week ago John March took command of a new "White" Pearl, built by Dan Caouette (CSFW). A couple of sea trials later…

Hi All,

After five or six test paddles, I finally got the outfitting mostly worked out today and immediately had standard layback, shotgun and butterfly rolls plus the balance brace working almost effortlessly onside and offside plus the kayak is now readily controllable with subtle movement from the hips. Next issue: how to keep water out of the cockpit, and after that it is on to the throwing stick and forward finishing rolls. Can't wait for the BIK symposium!

Kajaksurf 9-10 juni

Launching in Denmark

En ny dansk Black Pearl

From Peter Madsen:

Hello Björn.

This sunday was official launching day in the kayak club "Malik" in Faaborg on Fyn. A beautiful day in perfect weather. Some 40 kayaks appeared, 18 of them new after a winter of building efforts. Most were SOF:s. One had a glass plate in the bottom.

Kayak exhibition in Malmö

Kayak exhibition in Malmö

This weekend was the first kayak exhibition in Malmö (as far as I know). KajakEvent was the initiator and a lot of retailers had answered the call – approx 70 kayaks could be examined and tried on the water, plus paddles, gear, apparel et al. Nigel Foster conducted paddling classes saterday morning, and showed advanced kayak manoevering a couple of times during the afternoon, Ram Silval from Nepal showed tricks in a white water kayak both days and also a new, not even yet released, film from his decent in a white water kayak from Himalaya to the Bay of Bengal: "Source to sea" - and on sunday I talked about rolling as part of a safety strategy in sea kayaking and demonstrated a number of greenland style rolls, as opposed to the white-water-rolls that is often practised also in sea kayaks. I think it went well, despite traffic background noice in the first part, and enduring water of very dubious quality (the canal through downtown Malmö) in the second.

Photo weather

Launching in Lommaa

What was supposed to be a short practice run in drizzling rain (according to the weather forecasts) turned out to be a nice tour in magnificient weather - with the camera in the hands almost as much as the paddle. Launching in Lomma as often, some rolling outside the beach – discovered that Warren Williamson´s fluid roll in the film clip, was actually quite easy – and a short workout trip along the beach to Bjärred.

Kajakmässa i Malmö

Hold your breath a little longer?

Holding breath?

A kayak builder on the first steps towards a reliable roll asked if a had any advice on learning to hold your breath a little longer. The reason for asking was that he could only do one or sometimes two failed rolls before running out of oxygene. He suggested this as a topic for the blog (thanks Jim!).

Qajaqträff i Stockholm 26-27 maj.

Qajaq Sverige

A silent flexible baidarka

A silent flexible baidarka

Harvey Golden just published (Qajaqusa ) a report on his new baidarka. Interesting is that he through x-rays (George Dyson, Joseph Lubischer and Chris Cunningham) and close up pics from inside the hulls of museum kayaks have been able to duplicate the aleutic hunters sophisticated use of bone and baleen in the joints of the hull to increase the flexibility and silence the joints - such noice might scare the hunted mammals. More on Harvey´s site.

Looking forward to reports from the kayaks performance at sea…

Navigation class with slide show

Yesterday I wound up my navigations- and metheorology class at KajakEvent in Malmö. Two sessions, three hours each, concentrating on what can be done without any special equipment but a compass and a chart, and using fingers, arms, the paddle, the kayak to fix your position, calculate currents etc and with a little theory on map projections, maps/charts, compasses, interactions with ships, signals, wheather systems and predictions...

A new Njord in Dalarna

Hazze´s new Njord

Hazze in Falun launched his new Njord in lake Runn.

"Hi Björn.
The Njord is finished and tried at sea and glides easier and is a little tippier than my Kavat. I am very satisfied with the design. The deck is stained, the hull just clearcoated fir from a nearby saw.

A tiny Black Pearl

a tiny pearl

Official premier on lake Sommen i southern Sweden with one of the smallest Black Pearls I have designed – 480x45 cm – and a happy owner for the first time in a perfectly sized kayak.

The unoffficial launching took place in a pool at a technique and rescue class a couple of weeks ago - where Cajsa demonstrated that she can competently roll her tiny kayak. Petrus (with Petrus Kayaks in Tranås) built the kayak with Cajsa assisiting.

I can imagine one or two paddling girls and boys around being a little envious.
